Job description

An HVAC service supervisor oversees a team of HVAC service engineers , supporting them in their work installing, maintaining and repairing HVAC units and systems.

Day-to-day activities

Daily tasks include timetabling and allocating jobs to service engineers through both the use of software and communication with teams. This involves prioritising and co-ordinating jobs, as well as rescheduling tasks in response to deadline changes.

A large part of the role is supervising and supporting HVAC service engineers during the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC units and systems. HVAC service supervisors provide advice and assistance where needed.

They review and inspect all work carried out by their team both before and after completion. They also ensure that all work is undertaken according to standards and procedures, and health and safety policies followed.

An HVAC service supervisor will attend regular meetings and take part in training sessions. They will also be involved in planning and reviewing the budget for projects.

Other activities may include preparing reports, maintaining records, purchasing materials and hiring new employees.

Qualifications

An NVQ, HNC or HND in an HVAC field is essential, with electrical or mechanical qualifications also desirable.

Extensive experience of working on HVAC sites is also a requirement. Some HVAC service supervisors have previously worked as service engineers.

Skills and attributes

An HVAC service supervisor needs to have the ability to apply their experience and knowledge to support their team in the installation, testing and repair of HVAC units and systems. They therefore need to be self-sufficient and able to independently judge and inspect work carried out by the service engineers.

Good computer skills are vital because the role also involves timetabling and allocating jobs, and this is usually done digitally.

Health and safety knowledge is essential, as is knowledge of budgeting and preparation of costs and estimates.

An HVAC service supervisor needs to be comfortable working on their own as well as within a team. Good communication skills and the ability to establish strong working relationships are also vital to the role as it involves working with a variety of different people, from colleagues to clients.

Earning potential

An HVAC service supervisor typically earns between £30,000 and £40,000 basic salary depending on experience, with a range of additional benefits.

An HVAC service supervisor plays an active part in HVAC projects, and this can be both rewarding and challenging.

It’s a great role for people who like liaising with colleagues and clients, and each day features a variety of tasks.
